How does eliminating the granddather mean an end to a whole family? He’s got great successors and above all, did they really think that they could walk out unscathed after the “assasination”? When they just literally killed (if it succeeded) the elder right in front of everyone?
The hired gun is probably pretty strong. He probably does not want to involve his association directly by killing the patriarch, but it would not be as bad to help his “friend” flee. After all, it sounds the association is kind of big and the town is kind of small.
But I definitely feel like a big association should be able to come up with a better plan than a dagger in a box in front of so many witnesses…
